A Lasting Legacy: James’ Garden
A beautiful new sensory garden has officially opened at Osbournby Primary School in memory of James, a beloved pupil whose courage and joy touched the hearts of everyone who knew him.
James was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour at just two years old. Over the years, he faced multiple surgeries, rounds of chemotherapy, and several reoccurrences of the illness. Despite these immense challenges, James remained a beacon of resilience and happiness. He passed away in February 2022 at the age of eight.
James adored school. He loved learning, playing with his friends, and had a special fondness for Forest School. To honour his memory and the joy he brought to the school community, Osbournby Primary School – with the help of many generous friends and supporters – has created James’ Garden, a sensory space designed for all children to enjoy.
James’s twin brother Joshua was guest of honour and cut the ribbon to the garden, which features a pathway with sensory elements underfoot, and plants and flowers that stimulate the senses. There is a peaceful retreat for reflection and play with coloured glass sections for more stimulation. It stands not only as a tribute to James’s life but also as a celebration of the spirit of community that made its creation possible.
James’s parents Carl and Chantelle said: “We are eternally grateful for all of those people that have contributed to making James’ garden a reality. We are so pleased that James will have a footprint on the school that he loved so much, for many years to come.”
Heather Bide, Headteacher: “We wanted to create something that reflected James’s love of nature and learning. James’ Garden is a place where his memory will live on, and where children can continue to find joy, just as he did.”
She went on to say: “I cannot thank our community enough for their support with this. Particular thanks go to S&C Slatter who were a catalyst really to jump start the project. They had a team of staff here over several days to complete all the groundworks.
I would also like to thank all the school staff, who always go above and beyond for our school, but in particular today. And those staff who aren’t even supposed to be in who have come in this afternoon to help out.
Finally, to James’s brother Joshua, and parents Carl and Chantelle. You are an inspiration to us all. We hope James’ Garden is all you wished it would be. The children who attend Osbournby now and in future years, now have this wonderful sensory space to enjoy together.”
The school extend heartfelt thanks to the local community (listed below), whose support was instrumental in bringing the garden to life. From fundraising efforts to hands-on help, the project has been a true labour of love.
James’ Garden is now open for all pupils to enjoy – a lasting legacy of a boy who inspired so many.
James’s family have set up The James Anthony Foundation, a register charity that raises awareness around the signs and symptoms of childhood cancer, as well as supporting children and their families who have been diagnosed with a brain or spinal tumour. Click here if you would like to donate.
